Library helps folks enter computer age

Like it or not, we are wedded to computer technology.
This editorial was written on a computer (borrowed from a colleague, because the author's computer was down, but that's another story.
Once the article was written, it was sent to page designers who put together this page and every page in the newspaper you now hold in your hands.
The pages were then sent -- by computer -- to a printing plant, where the pages were put onto plates and onto a press for preparation of the final product. ...more...

Last week, a delegation from the island nation of Cyprus came to ask the questions again. How do you handle an influx of immigrants? How do you deal with troubled youth? How do you handle the economic impact? How do you get along so well?

Work permits are hard to come by -- and that's one reason the new program organized by OneMorgan County will be a boon to our area.
Recently, OMC announced it has been approved to offer legal immigration services for newcomers to our community. This means that the organization is authorized to run a program to help immigrants learn how to and to actually apply for citizenship.

About 35 people attended the first open house
Thursday at the Migrant Education Newcomers Academy,
which is now housed in the east side of the Centennial
Board of Cooperative Educational Services building on
West Platte Avenue.
They included families, members of other agencies, Fort
Morgan Board of Education members, area principals and
others and they came to see and learn more about the services

Brenda Zion, executive director of OneMorgan County, travelled quite a ways away last week from the location for which her group is named. That didn`t stop her from sharing her passion -- bringing communities together and embracing diversity -- with all of the other locations represented at the 2011 Colorado Municipal League Conference. The nationally-known Koshare Indian Dancers will kick off the International Music Fest at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, at the Brush Fairgrounds. Tickets are available for $5 for adults; children 12 and under are free. Buy four tickets and the fifth will be free. The Koshare Indian Dancers are the members of Boy Scout Troop 232. The Koshare Indian Kiva is located in La Junta, on the Otero Junior College campus. Troop 232 is a Scout troop like many others, and has a full program of Scouting activities, including camping, advancement and service. To become a Koshare, a boy must first be a Scout, which means he must have completed the fifth grade or is 11 years old, or has earned the Arrow of Light Award but is less than 18 years old. The 25-30 members of members of the troop perform native American dances. Each member makes their own costumes, which are replicas of those worn by the native tribes. Longtime local accountant and volunteer Roger Schaefer was named Thursday as the Fort Morgan Area Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year. Schaefer's award was presented at the chamber's 93rd annual membership meeting, which drew about 70 people at the Country Steak-Out.
