How is it that some people can only find problems, but others see the same situations as challenges? Not too long ago, The Times reported on a problem with new refugees` driving. Not only had some refugees had a number of relatively minor accidents, but one Somali refugee was killed in an accident because he did not understand how the highway system worked. There were those who claimed this showed that refugees should not be welcome in the community, and national anti-refugee groups who wanted to get their noses into our local concerns. However, local officials from the Fort Morgan Police Department, Cargill Meat Solutions and OneMorgan County quietly worked together to find a way to help refugees become better drivers. ...more...

Communication is the key, quite literally, to everything. Without the ability to communicate, we cannot share ideas, ask questions or have them asnwered, tell someone when we need help, or even begin to get anything done. Still, many of us in everyday life sometimes find it difficult to communicate effectively. We use a slightly imprecise word, or an inflection that inaccurately conveys our intentions or desires. From a kilt-clad Scottish bagpipe duo to a troupe of quick-legged Irish stepdancers, the entertainers at Saturday`s International Music Fest brought a variety of world traditions to Brush. The first group to take the stage was the Timberline Brass Quintet, a German polka band with members from Fort Morgan, Sterling and the Denver area. About a year ago, The Fort Morgan Times received a flurry of complaints about the driving abilities and habits of some of the immigrants in our community. These criticisms were not unwarranted — an inordinate number of immigrants, and particularly African refugees, seemed to be involved in traffic accidents.
